In 2015, VU Amsterdam successfully completed the accreditation procedure for the new interdisciplinary bachelor’s programme Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE). The programme is a joint initiative of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Social Sciences. Starting in September 2016, it will offer a thorough introduction to philosophy, political science and economics, and teach students to combine the insights and results from these disciplines. The programme is based on the idea that great societal challenges such as climate change, the structure of the financial sector or the refugee crisis, require a broad perspective. PPE has been around for almost a century in the Anglo-Saxon countries. VU Amsterdam is now the first university in the Netherlands which offers a full English taught PPE bachelor. With a stay abroad, internships and additional guest lectures by leaders from the world of economics, media, government and politics, this PPE programme prepares students for future leadership positions. The Advisory Board of the programme includes the former President of the European Council and VU honorary doctor Herman Van Rompuy and Chairman of the Board of ABN AMRO and VU-FEWEB alumnus Gerrit Zalm.
Small-scale training for outstanding students
With PPE at VU Amsterdam, the famous programme is now also available in English at a large university on the continent. Moreover, with the Dutch financial center ‘de Zuidas’ around the corner and the center of Amsterdam within a 15 minutes reach, this university offers an ideal location to study PPE. PPE is the programme we offer, the John Stuart Mill College provides the intellectual and social community of which you will become part while you study PPE. This community consists of students, junior and senior lecturers/researchers, guest lecturers (visiting professors from abroad and people from practice) and people participating in or contributing to extracurricular activities. In order to facilitate community life, the John Stuart Mill College has its own housing on the VU campus. For more information see www.vu-ppe.nl.
PPE is a selective programme, designed for excellent students who want to study in a lively international community. Depending on the selected direction, PPE graduates are eligible for master's programmes in each of the three PPE disciplines at home and abroad.
