Moes, N. (11-1-2013). Cooperative decision making in river water allocation problems. VU Vrije Universiteit (185 pag.) (Amsterdam: Tinbergen Institute).

With changing retirement ages and an aging workforce, interest is growing on the potential contribution of relevant bundles of HR practices in eliciting well-being and performance among aging workers. Drawing on theories on lifespan development and self-regulation, we distinguished two bundles of HR practices: development HR practices that help individual workers reach higher levels of functioning (e.g. training), and maintenance HR practices that help individual workers maintain their current levels of functioning in the face of new challenges (e.g. performance appraisal). Further, based on lifespan theories, we expected and found that the association between development HR practices and well-being (i.e. job satisfaction, organisational commitment and organisational fairness) weakens, and that the associations between maintenance HR practices and well-being, and between development HR practices and employee performance, strengthen with age. In addition, a third bundle of ‘job enrichment’ HR practices emerged that elicited higher job performance among aging workers.

Ridder, A.A.N., Rubinstein, Y. & Vaisman, R. (2013). Fast Sequential Monte Carlo Methods for Counting and Optimization (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics). London: Wiley.

This book presents the first comprehensive account of fast sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) methods for counting and optimization at an exceptionally accessible level. Written by authorities in the field, it places great emphasis on cross-entropy, minimum cross-entropy, splitting, and stochastic enumeration. The overall aim is to make SMC methods accessible to readers who want to apply and to accentuate the unifying and novel mathematical ideas behind SMC in their future studies or work.

Bloemen, H.G. (2013). Language Proficiency of Migrants: The Relation with Job Satisfaction and Matching. (IZA Discussion Paper 7366). Bonn: IZA.

We empirically analyze the language proficiency of migrants in the Netherlands. Traditionally, the emphasis in studying language proficiency and economic outcomes has been on the relation between earnings and indicators for language proficiency, motivated by the human capital theory. Here we analyze whether there is a relation between proficiency of the destination language and job level. A lack of language skills may induce the migrant to work in jobs of a lower level leading to lower job satisfaction. We use subjective survey information about job satisfaction and the fit between the migrant's education and skill level and the job. We also use objective information on professional level. For men, we find evidence for a positive relationship between indicators for language proficiency and satisfaction with work type and professional level.
