Together with the Econometrics Institute at the Erasmus Universiteit and the FEE the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences is organizing a Memorial Colloquium for professor Theil. The colloquium will take place at the FEE from 16 to 18 August.

Professor dr Hans Theil graduated in 1950 at the UvA with professor Hennipman as his supervisor. Theil, who died in Florida in 2000, can be seen as the founder of econometric education in the Netherlands. He started the first Dutch program in the 1950s at what was then called the Nederlandse Economische Hogeschool in Rotterdam. This example was followed by other faculties of economics. His research on econometric methodology and many topics in economics, which resulted in the publication of some twelve books, should be considered as among the most outstanding research of his time. Many people think he should have got the Nobel prize. He left for the United States in 1968, where he became famous at the University of Chicago.

Professor James Heckman (Nobel 2000) and professor Van Praag organize the academic part of the colloquium. About 25 speakers will shed light on recent developments in the research areas of professor Theil during this private colloquium. Dutch speakers present are professors Boswijk, De Gooijer, Heertje and Van Praag of the FEE, professors Kloek and Franses from Rotterdam and professor Magnus from Tilburg University. From the Free University in Amsterdam professor Gerard van den Berg and dr Hans Abbing will speak at the colloquium. Most of the speakers are from the United States.
